Gain valuable hands-on experience working with Mount Auburns preservation staff repairing monuments, and headstones using a combination of traditional and modern methods and materials. Projects include repointing of various building and structures, adhesive repairs of broken marble and granite monuments; repair and resetting of loose and leaning marble and granite headstones and possibly restoration of some chapel window frames.

Learn to properly mix, lay up and cure a variety of lime putty and naturally hydraulic lime mortar mixes formulated for use with different types of stone. Assist with epoxy repairs and practice the proper preparation and execution of high quality patches using a range of patching materials. Learn the potential dangers and benefits of cleaning stone using plain water, steam, or chemical methods.

Requirements include a strong preservation ethic, patience, and the desire to perform careful, conscientious, and lasting repairs to these invaluable historic resources. Prior hands-on preservation experience is a plus, but not necessary. Employee must be able to perform physically strenuous work outdoors throughout the summer.
