Keweenaw National Historical Park is charged with preserving and interpreting the history of hard-rock copper mining on the Keweenaw Peninsula, from prehistory to the present day. The park headquarters and archives facilities are located in the small town of Calumet, Michigan. The archives are housed in the former Calumet & Hecla mining Company Public Library building, which was built in 1897. Holdings in the archives include mining company records, business records, local government records, fraternal organization records, church records, family and personal papers, and assembled collections covering all aspects of life in the Keweenaw from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Many archival collections are associated with related museum collections, and include thousands of photographs. Archival collections are processed according to standards developed by the national Park Service, though because Keweenaw NHP's museum and archival program is still developing, very few of the archival collections at the park have been fully processed to date. The park has a small reading room, but due to the amount of processing that still needs to be done and because the archives building is not yet universally accessible, reference services are currently available by appointment only. Nevertheless, reference demand for archival materials is relatively high. Information regarding the park, its resources (including collections), and the surrounding area can be found at the park website, below. |

Position(s) available: 1 unpaid internship (possibility of 2) Term: 10-12 weeks, 40 hours/week, May-August 2008 Selection Criteria: archives student(s) with practical experience processing archival collections in a professional setting is preferred. Housing: furnished quarters will be provided for one or two interns in a single one-bedroom, one-bathroom apartment in an historic building roughly 1 mile from the work site (interns willing to share quarters should indicate so on their application; specific roommate requests should also be noted on the application). Off street parking is available at no charge, coin-operated laundry facilities are available in the building. Meals: intern(s) will receive reimbursement for meals during their internship, not to exceed $50/week per person. Mileage: intern(s) may receive reimbursement for use of their personal vehicle for travel to and from Calumet, Michigan, at the current government rate ($0.505/mile). Description: Archives students interested in a summer internship at Keweenaw National Historical Park would primarily be asked to help process and catalog archival collections under the supervision of the park archivist, but may also have the opportunity to undertake, collaborate on, discuss, or otherwise participate in a wide variety of tasks, and work with professionals of other disciplines, depending on their interests and opportunities available. These other tasks may include salvage efforts or other acquisition field work, appraisal, accessioning, mold and pest mitigation, cleaning, digitization, collections management, policy development, facility planning, environmental monitoring, integrated pest management, museum housekeeping, or reference work. NPS museum and archival collections are cataloged using the ReDiscovery product, the Automated National Cataloging System (ANCS+), which produces finding aids in print and online without requiring any EAD or other coding. Students might also have the opportunity to work with museum (object) collections, or with the park's small library collection, if they are interested in doing so. An internship at Keweenaw National Historical Park would provide valuable experience for anyone interested in pursuing a career with the National Park Service, other cultural resource institutions, or archival repositories. Calumet is located in the center of the Keweenaw Peninsula, which is roughly fifteen miles wide, and extends nearly one hundred miles into Lake Superior. The area is noted for its rugged natural beauty, temperate four-season climate, abundant historic and cultural attractions, friendly locals, and off-the-beaten-track character. Drive time to Calumet from Chicago is roughly 8 hours (6 hours from Madison, WI, 7 hours from Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN, and 10 hours from Detroit, MI). Calumet is a five-minute drive from the Houghton County Memorial Airport (CMX, the Canada Michigan Exchange), which is served by three flights daily to and from Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN (MSP). |
