National Heritage Areas expand on traditional approaches to resource stewardship by supporting large-scale, community centered initiatives that connect local citizens to the preservation and planning process. The National Park Service (NPS) provides technical, planning and limited financial assistance to the forty congressionally designated National Heritage Areas.

Description: An internship for 12 hours a week, running from mid/late September to December 2008, with possibility to extend if desired. Primary purpose is to assist with the day-to-day management of the National Heritage Areas program in the Washington DC office. Intern will have sole responsibility for some activities, as well as opportunities to attend meetings, National Heritage Area bill hearings on Capitol Hill and interact with staff in the field and in other NPS programs.

Specific Tasks to include:

" Manage program website and coordinate development of new content, including new audio components

" Research materials for ongoing National Heritage Areas program history project and National Heritage Areas program handbook

" Develop content for monthly news bulletin

" Provide project assistance to Alliance of National Heritage Areas, a non-profit Heritage Areas partner organization

" Disseminate information among NPS staff, NHA offices and the public, including the creation of new outreach materials

" Other duties as requested.

Qualifications: Seek graduate student or upper-level undergraduate student with focus in public history, historic preservation, American studies, anthropology, archaeology or related field. Must be comfortable with managing web content using Dreamweaver and/or HTML.
