Historic House Trust of New York City

Founded in 1989, the Historic House Trust of New York City (Trust) is a nonprofit partner to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation for the preservation of historic houses owned by the City of New York and located in public parks. The Trust's collection includes 22 historic house museums throughout the five boroughs. Each of these sites is administered by a separate nonprofit licensee dedicated to its continuing use as a museum. As an umbrella organization, the Trust works with Parks and the Boards of the individual houses to restore, interpret and promote the sites; to educate residents and visitors about the social, economic and political history of New York City; and to contribute to the vitality of surrounding communities. The collection is incredibly varied, including grand mansions, tiny cottages, a lighthouse, and a working farm.

The Trust is seeking a Historic Preservation Intern. Currently the Trust is working with a consultant to develop a custom, web-based database application. When completed, the database will help to track and organize information pertaining to conservation and property management at the Trusts 22 historic sites. The candidate will be responsible for the following duties relating to conditions assessments and database entry.

" the candidate will perform field visits and existing condition assessments of the Trust's 22 historic houses museums located within the five boroughs of New York City

" existing conditions data will be recorded on the Trust's paper forms while in the field

" the candidate will perform database entry of information culled from these existing condition assessments into the database application, along with data from existing paper files and a restoration project history

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the Architectural Conservation staff of the Trust in the Arsenal, located at 830 Fifth Avenue in Central Park. The candidate will be required to travel via public transportation throughout the five boroughs. All applicants must be at least upper-division undergraduates or enrolled in a Master's Degree program focusing on History, Historic Preservation, Conservation or other related field. The successful candidate will have an interest in historic preservation, be able to work independently, and have good written, communication and computer skills. Proficiency in MS Office and database entry required.
