University of Florida, Preservation Institute: St. Augustine (PI:SA) 2009 Program Information

Preservation Institute: St. Augustine (PI:SA) is an intensive eight week historic preservation field program that uses historic St. Augustine as a learning laboratory to introduce students to hands-on techniques in heritage conservation.

Open to graduate and qualified undergraduates with an interest in heritage conservation field work, PI:SA 2009 is a collaboration between the National Park Service and the University of Florida that utilizes the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, the oldest masonry fort in North America, as its cornerstone project. Specific areas of program focus include: world heritage conservation, an introduction to traditional trade techniques, evaluation and assessment of historic structures, historic masonry conservation, historic lime mortars, portland cement remediation, moisture issues in historic buildings, site interpretation, heritage maintenance planning and the role of preservation in global sustainability.

The cost of the program is $5,500 which includes tuition, summer housing and 9 semester hours of UF graduate credit.

Additional support for PI:SA is provided by the Preservation Trades Network, The Association for Preservation Technology International, the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, and the American College of the Building Arts.
