An internship for 10-12 hours a week, running from February to May 2009, with possibility to extend if desired. Primary purpose is to assist with the day-to-day support of the National Heritage Areas program in the Washington DC office. National Heritage Areas expand on traditional approaches to resource stewardship by supporting large-scale, community centered initiatives that connect local citizens to the preservation and planning process. The National Park Service (NPS) provides technical, planning and limited financial assistance to National Heritage Areas.

Specific Tasks to include:

" Support ongoing Heritage Area evaluation process, primarily through background research and document analysis

" Research and organize materials for ongoing National Heritage Areas administrative history

" Develop content for monthly news bulletin and for heritage areas website

" Prepare public relations materials for the 25th anniversary of the heritage area program

" Assisting with organization of program files

" Other duties as requested

Qualifications: Seek graduate student or upper-level undergraduate student with focus in public history, historic preservation, American studies, anthropology, archaeology or related field. Proficiency in Dreamweaver or HTML is strongly desired.
