Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana offers full-time summer internship opportunities for field surveyors in Bartholomew, Carroll, and Franklin counties for a period of 12-16 weeks beginning in May 2009. QUALIFICATIONS Surveyors should have a working knowledge of nineteenth- and twentieth-century architectural styles, with an emphasis on vernacular building types. Familiarity with different types of farm buildings and bridges is also important. The surveyor must have a reliable vehicle and be familiar with digital photography. Photography experience is helpful. Graduate students in historic preservation or a related field preferred. PAY The survey project begins officially on May 1, 2008 and is expected to end in September. Dates are flexible, but surveyors are expected to complete the project before returning to school or another job. Surveyors are paid an hourly rate of $9.50, and are reimbursed for mileage at $.42 per mile within the surveyed counties. Cameras, photo printing, and paper are supplied. Surveyors are responsible for their own food and lodging, though assistance in finding housing is available. JOB DESCRIPTION After initial 2-day training sessions, surveyors will begin work in the field. They must complete an Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory form (including photographs) for each eligible property or historic district. Surveyors are expected to use all the sources at their disposal to identify and describe properties, including Sanborn maps (if available), plat maps, and local historians/residents. Surveyors write brief histories of each township, district, or area of sites surveyed. Surveyors must also keep accurate USGS maps of the areas surveyed and make sketch maps if necessary. Surveyors use hand-held GPS receivers to determine UTM grid coordinates. |
