Since its founding in 1971, Heritage has built on its activist underpinnings and has dedicated itself to citywide advocacy and education, including special programs, regularly-scheduled tours, and rental of the Haas-Lilienthal House and grounds (property donated to Heritage in 1973).

In 1974, Heritage accepted its first preservation easement: the "Nightingale House" at 201 Buchanan Street. Since that time, Heritage has accepted donations of 60 permanent preservation easements, creating one of the largest preservation easement programs in the West.

Heritage is seeking an undergraduate or graduate summer intern to assist with the Historic Preservation Easements program. You will be working closely with our Easements committee and Heritage staff to help identify and contact potential easement donors, as well as update our current database of easement properties. Your responsibilities will include: researching existing National Register historic districts in San Francisco, identifying contributing buildings within those districts, contacting property owners with information regarding preservation easements, assisting with ongoing inspections of current easement properties, and updating Heritage's easement database. In addition, interns are asked to help with Heritage's general office operations when needed.

Candidates should undergraduate or graduate students, with an interest in Historic Preservation, American History, Urban Studies, Architecture, Art History, Architectural History, Anthropology, Urban Planning, Non-Profit Management, or similar field. Interns must be detail oriented and responsible. Qualifications should include:

  • familiarity with easements and how they work
  • knowledge of architectural history
  • experience in archival research
  • ability to do individual research at Planning Department, Office of the Assessor-Recorder, and other repositories of historic records
  • ability to discuss easements comfortably and confidently with property owners
  • strong organizational skills
  • familiarty with Microsoft Office (especially Excel) and Adobe Suite
  • experience with GIS software is favorable, but not required
  • Hours are flexible within M-F 9AM to 5PM. The internship is unpaid, but there is opportunity for college or graduate credit.
