The organization is also a Statewide Partner of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The mission of Maine Preservation is to promote the preservation, protection and vitality of Maine's historic places and to encourage quality design that contributes to the livability of our communities. Over 1,000 individuals, families, businesses and organizations are members of Maine Preservation, and we have a growing statewide constituency representing over 3,750 preservationists, historical societies, libraries, groups, agencies and elected officials.

Maine Preservation is Maines statewide nonprofit education and advocacy organization dedicated to the preservation of Maine's irreplaceable architectural heritage. We seek a self-motivated summer intern currently enrolled in a historic preservation graduate program to join us in a unique, memorable and highly rewarding nine-week internship which offers an opportunity to apply your skills while learning how preservation really works.

Your time will be divided between Maine Preservation and a highly-regarded restoration firm in Maine, Preservation Timber Framing, Inc. You will assist Maine Preservations staff with the 15th annual Maines Most Endangered Historic Properties Program and with other activities. Then you will work with Arron Sturgis, Vice President of the Maine Preservation Board of Trustees and owner of Preservation Timber Framing, based in Berwick, Maine, who will provide guidance and supervision in the hands-on preservation repair work. Throughout this internship, you will work with preservation professionals, property owners and community leaders. You will acquire a greater understanding and appreciation for the public and private sector roles in protecting, preserving and advocating for historic resources and the physical work involved in preserving historic resources.

Dates of Internship: June 1 to July 31, 2009 (nine weeks, exact dates are negotiable)  40 hours per week, 360 hours, with potential of additional paid hands-on time in the field.

Stipend: Compensation is provided at a $10 per hour rate by Preservation Timber Framing (or possibly more based upon experience) for the five weeks while on the job. Maine Preservation provides no cash stipend during the four-week internship, however.

Housing: Intern must arrange for his/her own housing and have a car available for travel.

Intern Responsibilities with Maine Preservation will include:

o Site visits to new nominations to Maines Most Endangered Historic Properties Program

o Research status of previously listed properties

o Preparation of press releases and website information

o Preparation or promotional articles, including photos and captions, for summer issue of Maine Preservation News and other magazines/press/media

o Preparation of display materials, photographs, graphics and photo captions

o Other office-related help.

Intern Responsibilities with Preservation Timber Framing to be determined, but will include:

o Carpentry, etc. work on historic rehabilitation/restoration project(s)
