Organized by the National Park Service the Hagerman Fossil Beds NM must provide a center for paleontological research, access for qualified scientists, scientific groups and students and to display/interpret the specimens uncovered at the fossil beds.

Intern will provide research assistance to the Park Paleontologist and Geologist by identifying, categorizing and applying proper processing numbers to specimens. Hagerman Fossil Beds represents the 6th most diverse Pliocene Epoch fossil record in the world. Originally famous for its extremely large cache of Equus Simplicidens (Hagerman Horse) it became a National Park in 1988.

The abundance of fossils found on the monument requires continuous identification, processing and preservation efforts.

Tasks will include:

  • Examination of field specimens and locality data
  • Applying correct processing numbers to specimens
  • Organizing records
  • Ensuring proper preservation
  • Preferred Qualifications:

  • Geology, Biology and/or Paleontology education or background
  • Experience in curatorial situations and museum records
  • Experience deciphering/referencing previous research
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn National Park regulations and goals
