The Preservation Manager is a key staff member responsible for overseeing the preservation, capital improvements and maintenance of the structures and sites owned by Historic New England. The Historic New England property collection spans four centuries and five New England states and is comprised of 15 National Historic Landmark sites and 28 National Register sites. The Preservation Manager will work as part of a team to care for a regional selection of sites. Historic New England has been a leader in establishing preservation philosophy, standards and methods, and continues to provide models of historic preservation for preservation professionals, organizations and the public. The Preservation Manager is the keeper of the Historic New England philosophy as it is applied to the preservation and maintenance of the sites under their management. The Preservation Manager will establish and sustain a thorough understanding of each historic resource under their management, will develop budgets, work plans and then contract out needed preservation, capital improvements or maintenance work, will document all phases of work in an appropriate manner and will demonstrate in all actions a commitment to long-term preservation and excellent maintenance of Historic New England historic resources. The Preservation Manager is responsible for coordinating their work with other teams within Historic New England. This includes working closely with collections staff and the historic site managers who manage day-to-day operation of the properties. Regularly surveys properties to ensure a full understanding of property needs and issues. Researches the historic record of a site to understand the preservation needs. Develops and maintains a list of restoration, capital improvements and maintenance needs for properties. Monitor boundaries, environs, community issues and other factors that may affect the long-term preservation of the properties and surroundings. Documents existing conditions at the sites. Researches preservation issues related to the work to be done. Develops budgets for restoration and maintenance work at the sites. Creates annual work plan of projects. Writes contract specifications or scopes of work or requests for proposals for outside consultants; coordinates the bidding process; selects contractor(s); oversees and documents repair work; approves contractor work; approves and processes contract payments. Writes completion reports for all work undertaken at the sites. Supervises Historic New England preservation staff and outside contractor work at the sites. Coordinates with historic site managers on cyclical maintenance items. Responds to emergencies as necessary. This employee has additional duties including periodic assignment to institution-wide interdisciplinary projects. Writes articles and makes public presentations related to Historic New England property care and develops outreach programs on preservation issues. Performs other duties as required. Qualifications: Requires a Bachelors degree in historic preservation, architecture, engineering, or conservation and a minimum of 4 years job-related experience. A Masters degree is preferred. Requires computer skills including working knowledge of word processing, e-mail, internet research, spreadsheets, and project management software. Experience with project management, HVAC, electrical and security equipment desirable. A valid drivers license and means of transportation is required |
