Job Summary: The Wisconsin Field Office Director will be based in Wisconsin and will provide direct services to all local organizations and communities currently involved in historic preservation efforts, except Milwaukee, Madison and Green Bay. This program position is funded by the Jeffris Family Foundation of Janesville, Wisconsin. One of the goals of the program is to increase awareness and appreciation of the benefits of historic preservation throughout the state. Another goal is to highlight the programs of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the funder, including other funder-provided financial support for historic preservation. The Field Office Director will report to the Senior Program Officer of the National Trust's Midwest Office, but will be responsible for maintaining a good relationship with the funder and making referrals to the funder for other projects. Working from a home office, this individual will maintain responsibility for overall operational and fiscal integrity for the Wisconsin Field Office Program. It is anticipated the director will travel extensively throughout Wisconsin. This is grant-funded position, funded by the donor in two-year increments since 2001. Funding is currently available at least through March 31, 2011. The Midwest Office will reapply for continued funding in the summer of 2010 with expectations the donor will renew the commitment beyond that period for an additional two or three years at least. The position is full time and entitled to full National Trust employee benefits. Duties: Technical Assistance Respond to constituent inquiries and secure sufficient information to determine an appropriate level of intervention under the NTHP National Intervention Policy. Represent the National Trust for Historic Preservation and make assistance from NTHP available whenever appropriate. When necessary, consult with Midwest Director on specific projects to evaluate architectural plans, proposals, recommendations, budgets, scopes of work and other materials developed by grant recipients.Develop a network of preservation supporters throughout Wisconsin who are willing and able to assist one another with preservation knowledge and experience. Administration Develop and maintain Wisconsin contacts database and inquiry log.Attend MWO staff, advisor meetings, statewide and preservation partners meetings and national preservation conferences. Contribute to the publication of the MWO newsletter.Identify, cultivate and review nominations for the NTHP preservation awards, the NTHP 11 Most Endangered Places, Dozen Distinctive Destinations and other NTHP programs. Participate in development of the annual MWO Work Plan.Education/Communication Act as a clearinghouse for preservation information. Provide guidance to communities and local preservation groups on a variety of subjects including advocacy, preservation techniques, fundraising, organizational development, capacity building, project development, community relations, politics, community development, conservation issues, public relations, and planning.Increase the profile of the National Trust and understanding of historic preservation through public presentations, participation in workshops and conferences, press releases highlighting visits to communities and promotion of other activities. Work in conjunction with Wisconsin Historical Society - State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to provide guidance to Wisconsin communities developing historic preservation programs, plans, ordinances and comprehensive plans as part of the smart growth legislation with goal of producing strong historic preservation elements in Smart Growth Comprehensive Plans. Encourage public participation in planning process. Promote creation of Historic Preservation Commissions. Assist or lead in the planning and execution of small conferences and workshops particularly in the underserved northern region of the state.Financial Assistance Aid in the solicitation of Preservation Fund grant applications; participate in decisions related to grant awards; and provide information to assist the MWO Program Assistant in timely responses to established program reporting requirements for grants and special initiatives. Guide potential applicants through grant processes with the goal of increasing local capacity of governments, historical societies, not-for-profit organizations and preservation partners.Work with the funder to identify projects for capital support and provide assistance to communities referred to the field representative by the funder. Increase understanding and awareness of programs and funding opportunities of the National Trust and donor through effective marketing.Qualifications: The position requires a Masters Degree in Historic Preservation or three or more years of experience in historic preservation. In addition to general knowledge of historic preservation processes and procedures, credentials or experience in the following related fields will strengthen a candidacy: -Organizational Development -Non-profit fundraising -Planning / Community Development -Preservation, Environmental, or Real Estate Law Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be self-motivated and self-directed are critical. Maturity of judgment and the ability to discern needs of the field are most helpful. Writing and public speaking skills are valuable. Familiarity with MS Office applications is essential. |
