The Jekyll Island Museum and the Friends of Historic Jekyll Island Incorporated (FOHJI) are now accepting applications for the 2007 Internship Program.

The internship exposes a limited number of students to the process of site administration, collections management, historic preservation, and archaeology within a National Historic Landmark District. Multi-disciplinary approaches will be emphasized and hands-on learning will be given highest priority. Interns will be supervised by nationally recognized preservation and museum professionals.

The Club

The Jekyll Island Club was founded in 1886 as a winter retreat for America's wealthiest families. Among its members were such powerful men as J.P. Morgan, Joseph Pulitzer, William Rockefeller and William K. Vanderbilt. In its heyday, the Club was referred to as the "richest, the most exclusive, and most inaccessible club in the world."

The Jekyll Island Club National Historic Landmark District, operated by the Jekyll Island Authority, is a 240-acre site containing 33 historic structures. The site is one of the largest restoration projects in the southeastern United States.

Jekyll Island also possesses 53 known archaeological sites, dating from the Late Archaic Period into the Jekyll Island Club Era.

The Internship

Museum Studies Track

The program's focus will consist of exposing interns to museum related tasks and duties. Interns will be trained and supervised in areas including primary document research, proper registration and cataloging practices, interpretive planning, and archival organization. One special project will be assigned to each intern to be completed over the duration of the internship.

Archaeology Track

Interns will gain experience in the field and lab. Field experience may include site identification, site monitoring, and the implementation of a Phase I survey or Phase II testing project within the National Historic Landmark District. Lab duties may include artifact processing, inspection and documentation of off-site collections, and the opportunity to assist in the development of a policy manual for the field and lab. Interns may also assist with the creation of a comparative collection, exhibit, or public archaeology program for the museum.

Program Requirements

The interns will provide a final project report and a presentation for Museum Staff and the FOHJI membership.

Following a competitive national application process, 2 participants in museum studies and one in archaeology will be accepted into a 10-week internship program. Participants will be admitted based on academic background and achievement, and a genuine interest in museum and archaeology methods and processes.
