About ORISE Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is a Federally Funded Research and Development Center for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and is operated by Oak Ridge Associated Universities. (ORAU) for DOE under a Management and Operating contract between ORAU and DOE. Under the provisions of the ORAU/DOE contract, ORISE developed a research participation program to permit members of the academic community to be assigned to DOE facilities to participate in the research and development (R&D) work funded by DOE. The purpose of the RPP is to permit members of the academic community to have hands-on experience in participating in R&D activities. ORISE Maryland Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Research Participation Program in Maryland (ORISE Maryland) provides opportunities for members of the academic community to participate in DOD (Department of Defense) programs, projects, and activities worldwide. Current US military approved facilities include the following: US Army Environmental Center (USAEC), US Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine (USACHPPM), US Army Medical Research Institute for Chemical Defense (USAMRICD), Edgewood Chemical and Biological Center (ECBC), US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC), US Army Research Laboratory (USARL), Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Air Force Institute for Operational Health (AFIOH), Department of Defense POW/Missing Personnel Office (DPMO), Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command/Central Identification Laboratory (JPAC/CIL) Naval Health Research Center Detachment-Environmental Health Effects Laboratory (NHRC), Red River Army Depot LAND Management Branch (RRAD), US Army Cold Regions Research Laboratory (CRREL), US Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (USA/CERL), US Army Corps of Engineers-St. Louis District (USACE/St. Louis). Opportunities exist for Faculty, Postdoc Fellows, Pre-doc Students, and High School, Bachelor, Master, students and recent graduates. Degree disciplines include Neuroscience, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Fisheries and Wildlife, Forestry, Anthropology, Archeology, Biology, Ergonomics, Public Health, Physics, Nuclear Physics, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Botany, Ecology, Historic Preservation Natural Resources, Geology, Epidemiology, Environmental Health Risk Assessment, Materials Science, Entomology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Computer Science, and Biology. Since its inception (1993), the ORISE Maryland programs have placed over 5000 applicants at 50 installations around the world. We currently have over 500 participants in the combined programs.

ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT PARTICIPATION PROGRAM

U.S. ARMY ENVIRONMENTAL COMMAND (USAEC)

Cultural Resources Project at Fort Bragg, North Carolina

The Environmental Management Participation Program for the U.S. Army Environmental Command (USAEC) provides opportunities to participate in USAEC on-going applied research and development projects, and environmental technology demonstration projects at Army installations worldwide. Project areas include Environmental Compliance and Planning, Cultural Resources, Natural Resources, Range Management, and Geographical Information Systems.

An appointment is available at the Department of Public Works, Cultural Resources Management Program. Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The project involves compliance with the National Historic Preservation ACT. The participant will conduct lab work including cataloging and accessioning artifacts, completing site forms, curating artifacts and records, report production, data entry, and graphics production.

This appointment includes, but is not limited to, the following:

ᄃ Archaeological fieldwork to include small-scale systematic shovel test surveys and site testing or evaluation (Phase II) investigations.

ᄃ Participate in outreach activities involving the local community. The participant will have an opportunity to develop a research project for presentation at a regional conference.

Applicants should have received a Bachelors or Masters degree in Archaeology, History or related Cultural Resources discipline within three years of the desired starting date, or completion of all requirements for the degree should be expected on or about the starting date. Experience with field and lab work as well as a general familiarity with prehistoric and historic artifacts from the Southeast and/or Mid-Atlantic regions is desired. Other applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The program is open to all qualified U.S. citizens without regard to race, sex, religion, color, age, physical or mental disability, national origin, or status as a Vietnam era or disabled veteran.

The participants will be selected based on academic records, recommendations, applied research interests and compatibility of background with applied research programs and projects at Fort Bragg and/or the host Installation.

The initial appointment is for one year and may be renewed for up to two additional years based upon recommendation of USAEC and subject to availability of funds. The appointment is full time at Fort Bragg.

The participant will receive a monthly stipend. The stipend rate is determined based upon level of education, training, and experience. Inbound travel and moving expenses are reimbursed according to established policies. Travel and other costs will also be reimbursed for training related to the project and approved by ORISE and the host installation.

The participant must show proof of health and medical insurance. Health plans are available through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education for Postgraduate Internship participants. The appointment is full time at the host installation.
