In 2008 two preservation organizations merged to form Preservation Buffalo Niagara to create a substantial, professional preservation organization for the Buffalo region, reinforced by the support of local foundations. The Preservation Specialist position will be funded for its first three years by a National Trust Partners in the Field grant, with year-one matched by the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo. The Buffalo area and the surrounding region have extraordinary architecture, distressed neighborhoods and historic rural communities. To provide field services throughout seven counties of western New York, including both urban areas and rural communities. Represent Preservation Buffalo Niagara and the National Trust for Historic Preservation and serve as these organizations shared staff person for the Western New York Partners in the Field program. Work in close coordination with New Yorks SHPO and the Preservation League of New York State. Serve as a preservation resource for the region, being the front-line contact, onsite advisor, provider of technical information (including information on PBNs web site), cheerleader, supporter, liaison to other resources, coordinator/facilitator of workshops and more. Work to significantly reinforce the efforts of neighborhood and community organizations, preservation boards, owners of historic properties, congregations, developers, historic sites, municipalities, additional public agencies and others involved in historic preservation. Progressively expand the capacity for providing field services by developing a network of volunteers with preservation and related expertise willing to provide assistance to preservation organizations and building owners. For some projects and issues, provide significant and on-going support, developing criteria for selecting such efforts based on an ability to provide critical help coupled with regional relevance. Whenever possible, reinforce the other programs, efforts and support for Preservation Buffalo Niagara and the National Trust. Document, evaluate and publicize the impact of the Partners program. Masters degree in historic preservation or a related field is preferred. Minimum of three years of experience in historic preservation with a broad understanding of historic preservation techniques. Experience in building rehabilitation a plus. Will need to drive own vehicle for regional travel, an ability to work independently and make presentations. Must be willing to work weekends and evenings and be able to attend out of town conferences and workshops. |
