The Ohio Historical Society (OHS) conducts a range of activities related to interpreting, collecting and preserving the state's heritage. In the last century, the society has collected more than 1.5 million items pertaining to Ohio's history, archaeology, and natural history. One of the largest state historical organizations in the country, OHS now has membership of over 9,000. A private, not-for-profit organization, the society serves as the state's agent in historical matters in return for financial subsidy support that constitutes two-thirds of the OHS operating budget. By statute, the State contracts with the Society to provide a variety of history-related services, including managing the state archives, administering the state's historic preservation office, and operating a network of historic sites and museums. The state's interests in the Society's activities are represented by nine trustees appointed by the Governor. Nine other trustees are elected by the board of trustees.

Survey and National Register Manager

NATURE OF WORK

Responsible for managing the Ohio Historic Inventory and National Register of Historic Places programs.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

Manages the Ohio Historic Inventory (and related bridge and landscape inventories) including conducting professional detailed reviews of survey forms and reports. Provides progress reports on survey program and respond to public inquiries about the Ohio Historic Inventory. Manages the National Register of Historic Places program including conducting professional detailed reviews of nominations, fulfilling public notification requirements including public hearings, provide progress reports on the National Register program, and respond to public inquiries about the National Register of Historic Places. Exercises independent management or review responsibility. Prepares for and coordinates staff input on nominations at Ohio Historic Site Preservation Advisory Board meetings. Assists with the National Historic Landmark, State Registry, and the Ohio Historic Homesteads programs, and special projects/programs as assigned. Establishes survey and registration priorities. Coordinates the Ohio Historic Inventory and National Register programs with other departments in the office and state and local agencies. Assists in the development and implementation of training and education for inventory and registration topics, including written material, workshops, conferences, presentations, and training sessions.

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with a wide range of preservation constituents in both the public and private sectors. Ability to use Microsoft Office or equivalent business software such as spreadsheet, presentation, word processing, and database applications. Ability to use Windows and Windows-based PCs and peripherals. Ability to implement, plan, and critically evaluate research. Ability to review, understand, and interpret a variety of technical data such as architectural and engineering drawings and specifications, primary and secondary research sources, product data, and maps.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Normal office environment. Occasional evening or weekend work. Requires ability to travel. Work may involve attendance at public meetings and site visits. Requires a valid Ohio driver's license.

QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate degree in history, architectural history or a closely-related preservation field, or its equivalent in education and experience, plus a minimum of four years of work experience in a professional capacity in the relevant discipline, and must meet the professional qualifications standards in 36 CFR 61, Appendix A. Familiarity with the Secretary of the Interior Standards and national historic preservation laws, regulations and guidelines.
