The Texas Historical Commission (THC) is the state agency for historic preservation. THC staff consults with citizens and organizations to preserve Texas' architectural, archeological and cultural landmarks. The Texas State Legislature established the agency in 1953 as the Texas State Historical Survey Committee with the task to identify important historic sites across the state. The THC is composed of 17 citizen members appointed by the governor to staggered six-year terms.
The agency employs approximately 220 staff in archeology, architecture, history, economic development, heritage tourism, marketing communications, historic sites, public administration and urban planning. The THC has been extremely successful in securing funding from both public and private sources, and has won national awards and recognition for such outstanding programs as the La Salle Shipwreck Project, the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Project and the Texas Heritage Trails Program.
