The National and State Register Historian is responsible for administering the registration element of the National Historic Preservation Act and the State Register Act in the State of Colorado. This position is a non-classified, full time position, exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the Director of the Preservation Planning Unit of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, and serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. This position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree in History, Architectural History, Architecture, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation or closely related field. Masters Degree in one of the above listed fields is preferred. The successful applicant must meet the Professional Qualification Standards in Federal Regulations 36CFR61 Appendix A for one of the preservation disciplines  History, Archaeology, Architectural History, Architecture or Historic Architecture. Experience in historical research and writing is required. Cultural resource management or historic preservation administration is desirable. Computer word processing and database experience, strong organizational abilities, and effective communication skills are needed. National Register program experience strongly desired.
