Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemeter

The Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery was formed in 2006 to maintain, promote, and research Richmond, Virginia's oldest municipal cemetery, the resting place of Chief Justice John Marshall, Revolutionary War hero Peter Francisco, much of Edgar Allan Poes family and friends, and many other notable Virginians. The Friends organizes programs, researches burials, connects with descendents, and assists in maintenance of this city-owned greenspace.

Internship Opportunity
Richmond, VA

This internship is an excellent opportunity to see the day-to-day operations of a small historic nonprofit. The intern will see all aspects of the organization and primarily participate in administrative and research tasks. Duties include:

  • Assist in creation and management of member contact lists using eTapestry software;
  • Assist in digitization of interment records;
  • Assist in architectural survey of grave markers, and entry of data in the Virginia Department of Historic Resources Data Sharing System (DSS)
  • Assist in planning and implementing spring events
  • Observe or participate in staff and board meetings, as able or appropriate
  • Assist staff and volunteers in light maintenance of buildings and grounds, as able or appropriate
  • Qualified applicants will be availible for flexible scheduling of 5-10 hours per week during the spring of 2009. This is an ideal internship for current students, and the Friends is happy to work with a student to make this a for-credit experience, though current enrollment is not required.
