Historical and Architectural Survey Coordinator

$3,075.00 to $3,420.00 per month

The Architectural Survey Coordinator oversees the historical architectural survey projects under the Certified Local Government and State Historical Fund grant programs. Of paramount importance, this position develops strategies and administers guidance regarding architectural survey. The Survey Coordinator updates and publishes survey guides, provides general information regarding cultural resource survey, and manages the countywide and Small Town survey initiatives, including through field assistance. Travel to all parts of the state in a variety of weather conditions may be required to observe survey projects. This position is eligible for flextime, flexplace, and job sharing as allowed under Society policy and at the discretion of the employee’s supervisor. This position is a non-classified, full time position, exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act, reporting to the National and State Register Coordinator, and serving at the pleasure of the Board of Directors. This position has been exempted from the State Personnel System.

Among the challenges to this strategy are that rural historic and cultural landscapes, including their associated architectural and archaeological resources, are among the most threatened in our state due to development pressures. Rural historic landscapes may be associated with agriculture, mining, transportation, and ranching. Often, resources not previously identified or inventoried prove more vulnerable to development pressures. As such, it is imperative to analyze proactively geographic and typological resources underrepresented in the current inventory.


The successful applicant must meet the Professional Qualification Standards in Federal Regulations 36CFR61 Appendix A for Architectural History. Landscape evaluation/documentation experience preferred. Additional consideration given based on previous survey work. Experience in historical research and writing, cultural resource survey and evaluation, cultural resource management, and historic preservation administration is desirable. The position requires the ability to plan and prioritize projects to meet deadlines and goals. The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, work well in a team environment, and be creative and flexible. Supervisory or teaching experience is a plus. Computer word processing and database experience, strong organizational abilities, and effective communication skills are needed.
