The Department of Historic Preservation at the University of Mary Washington invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor position in Museum Studies beginning August 2011. In addition to teaching the introductory sequence in historic preservation, the successful candidate will assume primary responsibility for courses focusing on museum practice, the place of artifacts in historical interpretation, and best practices in the curation and public presentation of material culture, and be involved in the Museum Studies minor. M.A. or M.S. in Museum Studies is required, with a Ph.D. in a relevant field (American History, American Studies, History of Science and Technology, Library Science) preferred. Previous teaching and professional museum experience is preferred. The Department of Historic Preservation offers an interdisciplinary major that educates students as to a broad range of preservation activities, methods, and theoretical perspectives.
