The Macon-Bibb County UDA is chartered by the State of Georgia with broad power to issue bonds and actively pursue appropriate development projects. Macon has numerous buildings on the National Register, many of which are in the downtown area. Also, many are either vacant or under utilized. The city has two very large economic engines in the downtown area…Mercer University and The Medical Center of Central Georgia which provide a strong draw for the community
There is a growing and successful investment momentum in the core downtown area to initiate and develop in-town living units as well as new businesses. We need to accelerate this nascent movement. Macon recently received a $5M grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation to link downtown with the Mercer University neighborhood. Additionally, the UDA currently owns 7 building sites (~20 acres) and is seeking mixed use opportunities for them. The process has begun; the successful candidate will take Macon to the next level.
Additionally, the City of Macon is embarking on the “Main Streets Program” and has hired a director who will work collaboratively with the UDA Director to maximize growth.

Responsibilities The Director will initiate and promote development/re-development projects that will preserve and enhance the overall appearance and economic vitality of the community. Primary focus will be given to the central core area with emphasis on economic growth while preserving and revitalizing a vast resource of historic buildings. Specific areas would include recruitment and retention of downtown business, increasing in-town residential living, and the acquisition and redevelopment of urban properties. The Director will effectively interact with local government and other groups that promote historic preservation, economic stimulus, and urban living. Job Requisites *Four-year degree in an appropriate field. Master Level preferred *8 years relevant experience *Strong interpersonal skills to bring multiple groups to consensus Required Qualifications: Knowledge/Experience in 4 or more of the following fields: Real Estate (Sales, Development or Management) Redevelopment of existing vacant/underutilized buildings and areas Development Financing Management and Interpersonal skills Community and Urban Planning Private Sector-Business Ownership Development Projects (Greenfields and/or Brownfields) Incentives/Tax Credits (Federal, State, Preservation, Stimulus, Foundations) Historic Restoration/Preservation |
