Wilderstein Historic Site is a house museum with grounds and trails that are open to the public. The estate's Queen Anne mansion and Calvert Vaux designed landscape are widely regarded as one of the Hudson Valley's most important examples of Victorian architecture. Wilderstein was home to the Suckley family for three generations. With over 150 years of family documents, supplemented by personal possessions including diaries, textiles, original furnishings and artwork, the site is a time capsule of a bygone era. The last resident of Wilderstein was Miss Margaret (Daisy) Suckley, a cousin and confidante of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Miss Suckley traveled extensively with FDR during his presidency, gave him his famous black Scottish terrier Fala and helped to establish his library in Hyde Park. The letters they exchanged, which were discovered at Wilderstein, provide one of the best resources for understanding the private side of Roosevelt’s life during his presidency.
