Historic Preservation Specialist (Archaeology)

[This position is presently funded for 18 months]

Job Description

This staff member reviews and provides comments on the effects of federal or state undertakings on archaeological resources in accordance with federal and New York state regulations. These duties can include the review and management of all phases of archaeological research reports, research methodology, avoidance methods, data recovery plans, sensitivity assessment and site information management. Applicant must have a thorough understanding of the application of the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation.


  • Evaluate the effect of State and Federal projects on historic/cultural resources and assist in developing avoidance or data recovery plans;
  • Represent the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation and the New York State Historic Preservation Officer to the public with other government agencies by providing information, technical advice and consultation;
  • Assist local sponsors and consultants in preparing reconnaissance surveys and inventories of historic/cultural resources;
  • Advise parties about preparing nominations for the National and State Registers of Historic Places, evaluate documentation, and prepare and evaluate nomination documents;
  • Evaluate historic preservation issues; develop and edit articles and other materials for publication;
  • Perform technical review of projects, including determining the existing condition, reviewing plans and construction proposals for compliance with historic preservation standards and programs, evaluating the impact of projects on archaeological sites, developing treatment recommendations and consulting with design professionals, cultural resources specialists, consultants, projects sponsors and local/regional governmental officials to resolve problems;
  • Manage electronic data
  • Assist other staff in planning projects;
  • Provide information to staff and the public about technical programs and standards by developing and conducting training programs, providing technical information, and preparing reports, brochures, and technical material.
  • Qualifications

    Minimum of a Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology and must meet professional standards, guidelines as qualified professional archaeologist under 36CFR61.

    Minimum of three years project manager field experience. Must be versed in the development and production of CRM reports.

    Documented experience working with submerged sites including shipwrecks strongly encouraged.

    Experience working with geographic information system (GIS) technology, specifically ArcGIS.

    Familiarity with New York State prehistory, history and maritime history encouraged.

    Familiarity with the interpretation of information gathered including side scan sonar, magnetometer, and sub-bottom profiling.

    Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential.

    Familiarity with computers, archaeological records and databases as well as state and federal preservation laws.

    Salary: $42,000 - $45,000 (negotiable based on experience). Full benefits package. This full-time position is presently funded for eighteen months.
