The Department of Geography and Geology invites applications for a tenure-track Historic Preservation Specialist at the Assistant Professor rank. This full-time position in the Graduate Historic Preservation Program will begin in September 2011. The preferred candidate will hold a Ph.D. (or have at least 18 hours of post-graduate credits) in Historic Preservation, American Studies, Historic Architecture, Preservation Planning, Public History, Heritage Tourism, Tourism Geography, or a related field. Applicant should show demonstrated experience or potential in teaching, research, publications, and grants. Proficiency in developing online and hybrid courses is preferred.

Founded in 1979, EMU’s Historic Preservation Program is one of the largest graduate preservation programs in the nation with an average of 80 to 90 students per year. It is certified by the National Council for Preservation Education. The Program offers concentrations in Preservation Planning; Heritage Interpretation, Tourism, and Administration; Conservation and Technology; General Preservation Studies; a Graduate Certificate; and an Undergraduate Minor. Candidates are expected to be able to teach a variety of the following courses: Introduction to Historic Preservation, Adaptive Use of Historic Structures, Problems in Architectural Interpretation, Principles of Building Technology, American Vernacular Architecture, Funding Preservation Projects, Heritage Interpretation and Tourism, Community Interpretation and Sustainable Tourism, Interpretive Programming for Organizations, and Field Methods (Field School). Additional areas of interest include preservation research and documentation, international preservation, sustainability and preservation, preservation technologies, digital cultural heritage, and geotourism. Student advising also is expected.

Eastern Michigan University enrolls approximately 23,000 students and offers a strong benefits package and collegial work environment. The faculty has access to research assistance and institutional support. The campus is located in historic Ypsilanti, five miles from Ann Arbor and about 35 miles west of Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario.
