Samasource is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects people living in poverty to work via the Internet. In parallel, we provide high-quality content moderation, data entry, and other outsourcing services to clients including LinkedIn, Intuit, and the US State Department. Samasource's San Francisco-based sales and delivery teams work with clients to move large data projects to a proprietary online work distribution system, the SamaHub. Dedicated, full-time workers around the world access the SamaHub from delivery centers monitored by Samasource staff. Samasource account managers and QA professionals ensure quality, accuracy, and turnaround times.

The engineering team is working on building a distributed work system. In just one year, we’ve found work for over 900 people and received funding and in-kind support from the Facebook Fund, Rockefeller, Templeton, and Mitchell Kapor Foundations, and the Stanford Social Enterprise Challenge, as well as numerous awards. Our advisory board includes luminaries in the fields of social enterprise, technology, and development such as Premal Shah, President of Kiva; Ken Banks, founder of Frontline SMS; and Katherine Barr, a partner at Mohr Davidow Ventures. We're innovating new ideas, new business models, and new technology. The Team:

The Samasource engineering team is looking for a talented Ruby developer. We are a rapidly growing and diverse team looking for candidates who will excel and thrive in a dynamic start up. If you are looking to play a key role in building a distributed work platform that will be used by people all over the world to better their lives, then we are your company.

The Job:

We are looking for two driven, self-motivated engineers who will develop and build the core architecture and features for our platform. Ideal candidates should have concept-to-launch experience building scalable web applications. As a web developer you will be involved in all aspects of the development cycle and work directly with Samasource’s management team.


• Write elegant, high quality, unit-tested code. Be prepared to send in samples of work that you're proud of, bonus points for contributions to open source projects

• Proactively communicate with workers and customers to understand and fix problems

• Fearlessly learn new technologies and comprehend new problem spaces

• Share your work with internal and external stakeholders in team meetings and at conferences


• 2+ years of experience working in Ruby

• 3+ years of relational database experience

• Strong understanding of Javascript and client-side technologies

• Comfortable operating in a Linux environment

• Strong working knowledge of unit testing frameworks

• At home in a very fast-paced environment with a high level of ambiguity

• Willingness to make this startup a major part of your life for the next two to three years

• Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
