Job Summary:

This position will be hired as either an Assistant or an Associate General Counsel depending on the level of experience of the candidate. The Attorney engages in legal advocacy and provides corporate legal services to and on behalf of the National Trust, its various offices and programs, and in support of preservation activities by outside organizations and individuals.

Duties:

Legal Advocacy: (Area of primary responsibility.) Engages in legal advocacy on behalf of the National Trust, including both litigation and administrative advocacy, at the federal, state, and local levels. Prepares high-quality legal writing (briefs, comment letters, memoranda) and participates in oral advocacy in a variety of contexts. Provides legal advice and assistance to regional and other program staff regarding historic preservation issues and controversies. Provides guidance and support to other preservation organizations and private individuals involved in historic preservation.

Corporate Legal Services: Provides or assists with the provision of a broad, complex, and varied range of corporate legal services involving the entire scope of National Trust activities. May be assigned primary but not exclusive responsibility for providing specialized legal services to specific assigned client offices within the National Trust. Provides advice and assistance, as requested, on matters relating to historic preservation easements.

Education and Outreach: Participates in public outreach relating to historic preservation law, including through the production of web-based information (including blogs), other publications, and participating in educational activities relating to historic preservation law for professional, student, and lay audiences.

Other: Assists with the identification and recruitment of pro bono legal assistance, internships, and other support for the National Trust's legal programs. Further develops own expert knowledge in areas of specialty and contributes to the body of knowledge in these areas through speaking, organizing conferences, and writing material for publication. As requested, assists with grant writing, organization of special events, and fundraising activities. Carries out other office responsibilities, both substantive and administrative, as assigned.

Qualifications:

Law Degree and member in good standing of D.C. or State bar; not less than two years experience in the practice of law, particularly in an area pertaining to the work of the office. Excellent writing and oral communication skills. Ability to work cooperatively with others in a small office under pressure. Background or demonstrated interest in historic preservation a plus.
