The Planning Department provides guidance for the future development of the City of Miami by preparing neighborhood plans; administering, interpreting, and preparing amendments to the Zoning Ordinance and the Miami Comprehensive Neighborhood Plan; preparing recommendations to and administering the Planning, Zoning and Appeals Board (PZAB), Historic and Environmental Preservation Board (HEPB), and other hearing boards; and collecting and analyzing demographic, physical, social, and economic data on the City of Miami.

The City of Miami Planning Department is currently seeking applicants to participate in an unpaid Internship Program in the Historic Preservation division. Interns will have an opportunity to earn college credit, gain planning experience, build professional skills, and network with urban planning, real estate development, and design professionals. The semester-long Internship Program is open to undergraduate and graduate students. General Functions • Provide support to the Historic Preservation division in the form of attending to the public, processing applications, and preparing agenda packages • Assist staff in collecting and preparing data and research • Assist staff in drafting legislation • Conduct field work, collect property data and search records • Prepare maps and planning reports • Assist planning staff at community meetings • Conduct basic office functions as needed, such as data entry, file management, and customer service Basic Knowledge and Skills • Basic understanding of planning and/or historic preservation principles • Competency in various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office and Internet applications. • Strong written and oral communication skills • Strong research and analytical skills • Motivated self-starter able to work independently • Ability to work effectively in a team environment • Desire to work with historic preservation and/or archaeology • Minimum commitment of 15-20 hours per week (unpaid) for each semester |
