Description of Work

*ANTICIPATED VACANCY* This position is for an architectural historian who will design, conduct, & produce historic structure & cultural landscape environmental studies for various transportation planning projects, maintenance activities, & permit acquisitions throughout the entire Department of Transportation. Specifically, these studies involve the identification & evaluation of architecture & historic viewsheds, including buildings, stuctures, bridges, districts, landscapes, & traditional cultural properties. This position is accountable for interpreting historic architecture & landscape regulatory requirements, determining the effects, pursuant to relevant laws & regulations, of project alternatives on significant historic sites, & is accountable for proposing & implementing mitigation measures to abate any adverse effects. This position requires coordination with various diciplines within the Department of Transportation, as well as association with the State Historic Preservation Office, other local, state, & federal agencies, & the public.

Knowledge , Skills And Abilities

Applicant must meet Department of Interior professional qualifications standards for architectural history, must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of American historic architecture & the methods and theories associated with field research including identification, data collection, evaluation & analysis of historic structures and cultural landscapes with special emphasis on NC architectural & vernacular landscapes. Must have a thorough knowledge of legislation & regulatory requirements related to cultural resources & registration requirements of the National Register of Historic Places, ability to prepare project reports, photos, drawings & site plan sketches, & to express oneself clearly in oral & written form. Computer experience, especially word processing, database, & spreadsheet applications are required. Experience with computer aided design & graphic layout is helpful. Travel and other work demands sometimes require work hours in excess of 40 hours per week & overnight stays. FAXED AND E-MAILED APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Training and Experience Requirements

Master's degree in historic preservation, panning, architecture history, or a closely related field and three years of experience in historic preservation; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in history, planning, or architectural history, or a closely related field and four years of experience in historic preservation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.
