The Faith and John Meem Preservation Trades Internship

The Historic Santa Fe Foundation (HSFF) is an organization that has thrived since it was founded in 1961. Our mission is to own, preserve and protect historic properties and resources of Santa Fe and its environs and to provide historic preservation education. We own nine properties in Santa Fe and hold historic preservation easements on others.

The purpose of the Faith and John Meem Preservation Trades Internship is to provide students in the preservation field with hand-on preservation trades training working on historic properties. This consists of exposing preservation students to the daily workings of a local preservation organization, including opportunities to observe local, state, and national preservation agencies in a functional setting.

Duties

  • Work approximately 32 hours a week under direction of HSSF Restoration
  • Specialist performing maintenance, repairs and conservation of HSSF properties
  • Attend monthly meetings of HSSF Board
  • Attend bi-monthly meetings of Santa Fes Historic Design Review Board
  • Accompany, interview and observe activities of staff of City, State and Federal agencies involved in preservation efforts on average of one day per week.
  • Attend and assist with HSSF events during term of internship
  • Prepare and present an evaluation report on internship experience at the conclusion of the term
  • Qualifications

  • Intern must either be currently enrolled in a college-level preservation program or have recently graduated
  • Priority given to applicants from Southwest
  • Expressed desire to gain experience in preservation trades
  • Prior experience in construction
  • Basic skills in carpentry, masonry and related trades
  • Ownership of basic hand tools
  • Term of Internship = 10 weeks

    Stipend:

    A modest stipend will be provided to interns selected for the Faith and John Meem Preservation Trades Internship. Intern will be compensated up to a 40 hour week at the rate of $10.00 per hour plus housing if needed during term of internship.

    This internship is available for the summer, and we are actively recruiting interns for summer 2011.
