Fort Wainwright, AK
$22 - 25 per hour

POSITION: Seasonal Architectural Historians for Summer 2011 field season in support of the U.S. Army Alaska Cultural Resources Program to be assigned at Fort Wainwright, Fairbanks, AK; U.S. citizenship required.

DURATION: Approximately 3-5 months, starting late May/ early June 2011. Crews typically work five 8-hour days each week. If necessary, time after September may be scheduled based on availability of funds.

SALARY: $22-$25/hour, based on qualifications and experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of Installation Architectural Historians, perform research and fieldwork necessary for the identification, documentation, evaluation, and reporting of historic resources, especially historic buildings. Conduct initial research and assessment of primary archival collections, according to professional standards. Additional responsibilities as assigned by Fort Wainwright Cultural Resources Staff.

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Requirements: Completion of junior year in a history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related degree program with emphasis in historic preservation and/or architectural history. Preferred applicants will have BA/BS in history, architectural history, historic preservation, or closely related field, and experience in conducting building surveys and historical and archival research. Applicants must be extremely flexible; be able to work well with others; posses a positive attitude; have excellent organization skills; proficiency in Microsoft software; excellent written and verbal communication skills; and the ability to handle multiple tasks concurrently.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS IN ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING CREITERIA: Graduate work in Architectural History or Historic Preservation; experience conducting building inventories/ documentation; experience using photographic equipment; knowledge of Historic Preservation practices, Section 106 and the National Historic Preservation Act, and the National Register of Historic Places standards; knowledge of archival principles, concepts, methodologies, techniques, and procedures; previous experience with military, and/or World War II/Cold War era architecture.

PLEASE NOTE: Travel expenses to Alaska will not be paid. No housing or per diem will be provided. Applicants are responsible for securing housing and arriving daily at installation.
