DESCRIPTION Internship opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students in beautiful Fort Madison, Iowa. Fort Madison is the largest battlefield in the state of Iowa and the only site in Iowa related to the War of 1812. We are also home to the Tri-State Rodeo, started in 1948. We are located 15 minutes south of Burlington, Iowa and 15 minutes north of Keokuk, Iowa in the south eastern corner of the state. Chicago, Des Moines and St. Louis are less than 4 hours away and we can be reached via Amtrak from Chicago and St. Louis. Come see where Iowa started! Undergraduate: Responsibilities will include site and history interpretation and site management. Working closely with the Executive Director and volunteers, this internship will provide students will experience in budgeting, building maintenance and construction, site and history interpretation, marketing and tourism. There is no stipend available and students will be responsible for housing (which is very affordable in Fort Madison). Arrangements may be made with the Main Street Director or Old Fort Director. Students must have at least a 3.0 GPA and must be seeking credit in museum or archival studies, history or historic preservation. Graduate Responsibilities will include working closely with the Executive Director and volunteers, to formulate new preservation techniques and manuals, accurate site interpretation and renderings/maps, as well as marketing and tourism of this precious site. Graduate students will be encouraged to help plan and be the lead contact on Bicentennial (War of 1812) efforts. This is a rare opportunity for a graduate student to really shine!
