The St. Mark’s Historic Landmark Fund offers internships for motivated individuals looking to gain experience in historic preservation or a non-profit environment. All internships are unpaid, but we are happy to work with students who would like to complete an internship for school credit. We make every effort to tailor internship experiences to fit an intern’s skills and interests, though there may be times when we ask for help with other projects going on in the office if more hands and assistance are needed. Internships are available for both students (undergraduate, graduate, and international) and non-students.

Potential Areas of Responsibility for Interns:

History/Archives: Building History Project

Description: An intern will help conduct architectural and social research on the historic Ernest Flagg Rectory to St. Mark’s Church-in-the-Bowery, which spans over 100 years. The 1901 Beaux Arts building designed by Ernest Flagg served as a residence for the Rector of St. Mark’s Church and as workspace for arts groups until 1988, when it was damaged by a fire. Today it houses the Neighborhood Preservation Center (a project of the St. Mark’s Historic Landmark Fund), whose services include meeting rooms, office spaces, and a Resource Referral Service to encourage the public to convene, strategize, and exchange information on place, urban planning, historic preservation, and environmental advocacy.

Requirements: This internship position would be perfect for someone with an interest or background in architectural history, community development, urban planning and/or historic preservation. The candidate should be detail-oriented, have strong writing skills, and research experience.

History/Archives: Peg-Leg Pete Scavenger Hunt

Description: An intern will help research and create a new edition of Peg-Leg Pete's Bouwerie Tour to include a new layer of history that has happened on the footprint of Stuyvesant’s historic farm and connects to the history of St. Mark’s Church In-the-Bowery. (For example: off-off Broadway theatre has its roots in the Village and St. Mark’s was just one location.) Based on this, a new set of questions will be developed and tested for the third annual Scavenger Hunt, which will take place during Five Dutch Days Five Boroughs in November 2011.

Requirements: This internship position would be perfect for someone with an interest or background in architectural history, community development, urban planning and/or historic preservation. The candidate should be detail-oriented, have strong writing skills, and research experience.

Architecture/Facilities Management

Description: The primary responsibilities of this internship will be to contribute to a comprehensive facilities manual for the historic Ernest Flagg Rectory, which is managed by the Landmark Fund and houses its Neighborhood Preservation Center project. The intern will examine current conditions and research the building systems of the Rectory to St. Mark’s Church-In-the-Bowery, a 1901 Beaux Arts building designed by Ernest Flagg. Intern assists with the writing and research of a facilities manual for to guide in its care and maintenance. Results will be compiled in a guide for long-term environmentally-friendly maintenance.

In addition, the intern may research and help with aspects of a possible design project and there may be an opportunity for the intern to be involved in a project to repair the 10th Street entrance to the West Yard of St. Mark’s Church In-the-Bowery.

Requirements: This internship is a great opportunity for someone interested in architecture, engineering, building conservation, historic preservation and/or environmental design. The candidate should have familiarity with building systems, architectural details in historic structures, and ideally some experience with architectural drawings.

Resource Center Internship

Description: The Neighborhood Preservation Center, a project of the St. Marks Historic Landmark Fund, is seeking an intern to coordinate our public resources pertaining to New York City buildings, organizations, and institutions. The intern would assist in updating our various online databases including our NYC Landmarks Designation Database and our Resource Referral Service—a custom-designed database that links the public with organizations, institutions and individuals that can assist them with inquiries related to neighborhood improvements, community revitalization, and historic preservation. Secondary responsibilities will include updating and maintaining resources at the Center which include our reference library and designation report collection, and responding to research inquiries by the public.

Requirements: This internship is a great opportunity for someone interested in historic preservation, historic research, library science, and urban planning. The candidate should be detail-oriented, organized and have some research and database management experience.
