The National Register position is responsible for the implementation of the NRHP program for the NHPA. The primary responsibility is to utilize the National Register criteria to assess historic properties for National Register eligibility and to prepare and edit National Register nominations.

The annual salary for this position is $30,372. Requirements are a Bachelors Degree in History, Architectural History, Historic Preservation or a closely related field and one year of relevant professional experience. A graduate degree may serve in lieu of the required experience.

Specific duties include:

Review National Register nominations for technical and substantive accuracy. Some nominations are part of federally funded grants, however, the majority of nominations in the state are prepared by non-professionals. The reviewer frequently works with the NRHP reviewer at the National Park Service.

Assure that all State Review Board notification procedures are completed according to federal regulations (36CFR60).

Assist with preparations for the three yearly State Review Board meetings and keeping the State Review Board members apprised of NPS guidelines and standards.

Explain and promote the National Register of Historic Places program in the state.

Advises and assists the state’s regional preservation planners. Advise federal and state agencies on the eligibility of properties for review and compliance procedures. Review part I tax incentive forms.

Work with other staff to formulate policy regarding integrating survey, planning, and nominations.

Performs other duties as required, including administering federal grants, supervising student interns, and assisting with the state’s historic preservation plan.

This position involves travel in the state.
