ARCH, Inc., a not-for-profit historic preservation group based in Fort Wayne, IN, has an opening beginning on or about October 1, 2011 for a full-time Preservation Specialist. Job Description The Preservation Specialist will have primary responsibility for implementation of the Allen County (IN) survey for the Indiana Historic Sites and Structures Inventory. This will include field documentation as well as possible supervisory duties with other surveyors. The Preservation Specialist will ensure complete site documentation for each identified property. This includes recording detailed information using an electronic field application, creating a site map, taking digital photographs, and obtaining at least one UTM coordinate for each property. Other duties as assigned may include, but are not limited to, Section 106 Review, completing National Register Nominations, public presentations on historic preservation topics, grant-writing, work with ARCH Board members, volunteers and the public, and work with ARCH’s Endangered structures list. Minimum Qualifications Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with course work that would provide them with a solid knowledge of nineteenth and twentieth century American architecture. In addition, familiarity with vernacular house and building types, and bridge truss types is important. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of digital photography and Microsoft Office applications. Travel is required so candidates must have a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license. Preference will be given to candidates who have a completed Masters degree in Historic Preservation or a related field, or who have graduate level coursework in documentation and registration of historic properties. Compensation The position is a salaried full-time position and will remain open until filled.
