Description of Work This position is for an architectural historian who will design, conduct, & produce historic structure & cultural landscape studies for various transportation planning projects, maintenance activities & permit acquisitions throughout the entire Dept. of Transportation. Specifically, these studies involve the identification & evaluation of historic properties, including buildings, structures, bridges, districts, landscapes, objects & traditional cultural places. This position is accountable for interpreting historic property regulatory requirements, determining the effects (pursuant to relavant laws & regulations) of project alternatives on significant historic sites, & is accountable for proposing & implementing mitigation measures to abate adverse effects. This position requires coordination with various disciplines within the Dept. of Transportation as well as association with the State Historic Preservation Office, other local, state & federal agencies & the public.
Knowledge , Skills And Abilities Applicant must meet the Dept.of Interior Professional Qualifications Standards for Architectural History. Applicant must show direct architectural history experience with examples of Nat'l Register nominations, eligibility evaluations of properties according to Nat'l Register criteria, or conducting historic building field surveys. Applicant must demonstrate a thorough knowledge of American historic architecture & the methods of field survey including identification, data collection, evaluation & analysis of historic structures & cultural landscapes with special emphasis on NC architectural & vernacular landscapes. Applicant must have a through knowledge of legislation & regulatory requirements related to cultural resources & registration requirements of the Nat'l Register of Historic Places. Applicant should demonstrate an ability to prepare project reports, photos, drawings & site plan sketches. Computer exp. required, GIS helpful. Travel & work demands sometimes require >40 hrs/wk and overnight stays. FAXED AND E- MAILED APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Training and Experience Requirements Master's degree in historic preservation, panning, architecture history, or a closely related field and three years of experience in historic preservation; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in history, planning, or architectural history, or a closely related field and four years of experience in historic preservation; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions. |
