Statutory qualifications:
· Graduate degree in American history, anthropology, architecture, or historic preservation or related disciplines;
· Five years professional experience in American history, anthropology, architecture or historic preservation or any combination of these; or
· A substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the applicants chosen field.
The successful candidate will exhibit the following characteristics:
· Strong leadership and management skills needed as Division Director and leader of historic preservation in New Mexico
· Ability to understand and coordinate the various preservation professions to work toward common goals
· Ability to administer all function areas within HPD
· Excellent mediation skills
· Understanding of the breadth and potential of the position to further the goals of heritage and preservation statewide
· Political acumen
· Knowledge of preservation law at local, state and national levels
· Skills in working with diverse cultural groups and interest groups
· Solid understanding of the cultural heritage of the Southwest
