PAL, the leading cultural resource management (CRM) firm in New England, has an immediate opening for an experienced Architectural Historian. The primary responsibilities of the position are to conduct historical research and field survey to identify and evaluate historic aboveground resources in support of CRM compliance projects. The Architectural Historian will have the opportunity to work on challenging projects throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic regions and contribute to PALs outstanding reputation for providing our clients with high-quality CRM services. 

The minimum qualifications for the Architectural Historian position are a graduate degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Public History, or a closely related field and at least three (3) years experience in the field of CRM.  Candidates with a BA in one of the related fields and at least five (5) years of strong CRM experience will be considered. The successful candidate will possess the following attributes:

  • demonstrated experience in conducting historic architectural surveys, National Register nominations, and HABS/HAER and/or state-level historic documentation;
  • knowledge of Eastern U.S. architectural and landscape history and ability to identify and describe examples of specific styles and types;
  • outstanding historical research, digital photography, and technical writing skills;
  • solid understanding of federal and state historic preservation laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines;
  • schedule flexibility, including the ability to travel overnight and occasionally more extended stays;
  • supervisory experience; and
  • ability to work independently and as a member of a team.
