Duties and responsibilities: The Executive Director will work with the Mount Vernon Downtown Association's (MVDA) board of directors, committees and volunteers to implement a comprehensive downtown revitalization program using the Main Street Four Point Approach®. The Executive Director is responsible for the development, conduct, execution, and documentation of the program.
The Executive Director will be the principal on-site person responsible for: Coordinating all program activities and volunteers; Representing the organization locally, regionally, and nationally as appropriate; Purchasing; record keeping; budget development and preparing and timely filing necessary reports such as those required by the Main Street® program.
The Executive Director will coordinate and assist MVDA committee. Develop and implement work plans and facilitate ongoing communication between the board and committees. Manage all administrative aspects of the local Main Street® program. Develop and maintain a data system to track the progress of the local program; Develop, in conjunction with the Board of Directors, strategies for preservation-based downtown economic development using the community's human and economic resources. Conduct ongoing public awareness and education programs designed to foster an understanding of the MVDA's goals and objectives. Coordinate fundraisers, activities and financial systems Help build strong and productive working relationships between downtown interests and appropriate public agencies at the local and state level; and act as a liaison to help create a cooperative climate between and among the various downtown stakeholder groups.
Requirements: The successful candidate should have at education and/or experience in one or more of the following areas: architecture, historic preservation, economics, public relations, marketing, promotions and special event coordination, design, journalism, planning, business administration, public administration, retail management, volunteer or nonprofit administration and economic or small business development. He or she must be sensitive to design and preservation issues. He or she must understand issues confronting downtown business people, property owners, public agencies and community organizations.
The successful candidate must be entrepreneurial, energetic, imaginative, well organized and capable of functioning effectively in an independent situation. He or she must have the ability to build and sustain a team of motivated volunteers. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential. He or she must have experience in creating, managing, and updating websites and social media forums. Supervisory skills are desirable. Some travel required.
Previous staff experience working for a Main Street® organization, another type of downtown organization, or a volunteer-based nonprofit organization a plus.
Responsible to: Mount Vernon Downtown Association Board of Directors
Schedule: 40+ hours per week. Flexible schedule based upon activities of organization.
Salary: $38,000-$42,000 per year, commensurate with experience.
