Background The Ohio Historical Society (Society) is a private, nonprofit organization incorporated in 1885 by a group of Ohioans with the goal of preserving evidence of the state’s past. Today, the Society is one of the nation’s largest historical organizations and conducts an extensive range of activities including operating a statewide network of historical properties and museums; creating and presenting public historical education programs; managing the resources and services of the state archives; providing support to local historical organizations; and publishing the popular history magazine TIMELINE; and administering the state’s historic preservation office. Since the enactment of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966, the Society has managed the state’s historic preservation office. Today, the Ohio Historic Preservation Office (OHPO) has a staff of 29, comprised of four departments. The office annually conducts over 6,000 reviews of federal undertakings, oversees inventories of over 145,000 buildings and archaeological sites and over 3,900 National Register listings, works with 56 Certified Local Government communities, reviews between 200 and 400 federal and state historic tax credit applications per year; and manages online inventory applications, tracking databases and an online GIS. The office conducts workshops and training programs for professionals and for the general public, produces informational publications, and recognizes outstanding historic preservation accomplishments with Ohio Historic Preservation Office Awards.

The Director of Historic Preservation serves as Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer and on the Societys senior management team. The Societys director, Burt Logan, holds the title of State Historic Preservation Officer; however, all day-to-day operations of the Ohio Historic Preservation Office are administered by the Deputy State Historic Preservation Officer. 

  

The position supervises a staff of 29 within the Historic Preservation Division and has the following primary direct reports:

 

  • Education and Support Services department head
  • Inventory and Registration department head
  • Resource Protection and Review department head
  • Technical Preservation Services department head

Compensation

The position is a Grade 12 position in the Societys salary structure.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  The Society offers an excellent benefits package, including health, dental, and vision coverage, life insurance, long term disability coverage, and participation in the Ohio Public Employees Retirement System.
