A Field Archaeologist/Editorial Specialist (Research Associate II Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This position is located at Fort Riley, Kansas.

CEMML is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University (CSU). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense and other public lands. LOCATION

Fort Riley is an approximately 100,000-acre United States Army installation located in Kansas. Fort Riley is located near the towns of Junction City and Manhattan, Kansas. Junction City is a growing city of over 20,000 and maintains its small town atmosphere. Manhattan has a population of over 50,000 and is the home to Kansas State University. Fort Riley and the surrounding areas have access to numerous recreational, cultural, educational, and leisure opportunities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities for this position will include assisting the Cultural Resources Program staff by planning and conducting Section 106 and 110 archaeological surveys, site evaluations for eligibility for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, and mitigation of archaeological sites that may be in conflict with Army missions. The successful candidate will also assist in the planning and implementing of archaeological policies and procedures and the Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan, with  routine field mapping of archaeological sites and features using total station and GPS devices, and with artifact processing/analysis tasks on cultural materials recovered in field work. The incumbent will write and contribute to the timely production of final reports on work accomplished and will conduct research on historic documents, tax records, and maps.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A BS/BA in anthropology, history, or closely related field, plus three years of professional experience in archaeology and cultural resources management, is required. Candidates must have a demonstrated knowledge of archaeological survey methodology, site testing methodology, and field data recording. The ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions and rugged terrain with minimum supervision, as well as experience with Microsoft Office, are a must. Candidates must have or be able to obtain a valid drivers license. The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

An MS/MA in anthropology, history, or closely related field is preferred. Experience with historic and Plains archaeology and experience with directing archaeological surveys, determinations of eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, analysis of archaeological materials, and conducting basic research is a plus. Demonstrated knowledge of Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 (as amended), 36 CFR 800, Archeological Resources Protection Act, Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, Army Regulation 200-1, and other pertinent laws and regulations governing historic properties is desired. Preference will be given to applicants with experience writing, preparing, and/or contributing to archaeological surveys and site examination reports.

SALARY

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.  Range $35,000-$37,000.  Continuation of the position is dependent on the receipt of funding from the sponsor for Field Archaeologist/Editorial Specialist efforts at Fort Riley.
