Program Description: Our mission is to save and sustain historic places for public benefit through partnerships that foster public involvement, engage volunteers and provide training and education. Specifically, HistoriCorps: • Saves historic buildings • Teaches volunteers traditional building skills • Encourages volunteerism on public lands The summer 2013 projects will restore/rehabilitate multiple historic log, stone, adobe, and frame buildings that were originally used as ranger stations, guard stations, cow camps, and miner cabins. The buildings are all remotely located on America’s spectacular public lands (BLM, NPS, USFS, state lands). Most projects are located in the Rocky Mountains. However, the Crew Leader may be asked to travel anywhere in the United States. While most are accessible by high clearance vehicles, some require a hike to access the sites.

We are looking for a few good historic preservationists who love to cook in the wilderness, or good cooks who love old buildings in the wilderness!  If you love cooking for others and want to work on old buildings, come spend a season with HistoriCorps.  If you are studying or working toward a career in historic preservation, and you love to cook, come spend a season with HistoriCorps ...

Crew Leaders will work at the direction of and assist the Project Supervisor on all aspects of HistoriCorps projects.  Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, purchase and prepare meals for paid crew and volunteers;
  • Assist the preservation Project Supervisor to plan and  coordinate tasks for volunteer, student, or youth crews;
  • Work alongside volunteers on tasks as designated by the Project Supervisor;
  • Adhere to and promote work safety standards;
  • Provide a safe, clean, bear-proof camp kitchen;
  • Serve as a liaison between volunteer crews and project supervisor;
  • Camp onsite in primitive lodging; ensure a clean and safe campsite and toilet facilities, and be responsible for the welfare of everyone camping onsite;
  • Assist with natural and cultural resources compliance.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • A willingness to work long days in variable weather;
  • Able to live and work in a remote and/or backcountry setting (i.e. tents) for up to 14 days at a time;
  •  A valid drivers license and a good driving record;
  • A rudimentary knowledge of handtools and the building trades, and a willingness to learn;
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills;
  • Enjoy infusing in others your enthusiasm for the wilderness and  historic resources;
  • Work well in groups;
  • Have the ability and aptitude to cook, and enjoy cooking, meals for large groups (8-18 people at a time).

The preferred candidate will:

  • Possess rudimentary building trade skills and a positive attitude toward old buildings, log working experience ideal;
  • Demonstrate a high aptitude for culinary endeavors;
  • Be First Aid or First Responder certified
  • Have previous leadership experience with crews, ideally in remote and/or backcountry settings.
