Preservation Greenpoint

Preservation Greenpoint is a newly-formed grassroots community organization devoted to protecting and celebrating the historic architecture of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The neighborhood has two historic districts and four individual landmarks designated by the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC). But broad preliminary evaluations have revealed much historic architecture that is unprotected, and these significant buildings are too quickly being insensitively altered or demolished. Without a concerted effort to address these threats–and designate significant buildings–the sense of place of Greenpoint is in danger of being lost. Preservation Greenpoint is launching a comprehensive survey of the neighborhood’s historic resources, required for the identification of potential individual landmarks. The final product of this survey will be an architectural “wish list” used as an aid for the drafting and submission of LPC Requests for Evaluations and National Register of Historic Places listings. By photographing and documenting basic building information for significant historic structures in this area, Preservation Greenpoint can create an inventory of what remains of the neighborhood’s rich architectural heritage in order to move forward in the fight to protect it.
