Preservation Maryland is the statewide non-profit preservation organization dedicated to preserving Marylands rich and diverse heritage of buildings, landscapes, and archeological sites. Through advocacy, outreach, and funding programs Preservation Maryland assists individuals and communities with their efforts to protect and utilize their historic resources. A hard working staff of seven handles a wide variety of responsibilities in a collaborative environment.
We are currently recruiting for a Development Director to join our team. At Preservation Maryland development, marketing and communications are the responsibility of this position. These three critical strategies tie to our overall goal of increasing resources and visibility for preservation in the state.
The individual in this position will lead annual fundraising campaigns including the Annual Appeal, Membership Retention, and Membership Development. The goal is to build our retention rates and increase the base of donors.
Major gifts, planned giving and corporate and foundation funding are the responsibility of this position. The goal is to move donors up the giving ladder and to support special initiatives.
Communications and marketing fall within this positions scope with the goal of continuous contact with our current supporters, gaining new supporters and increasing our overall visibility with the public.
Preservation Maryland has a strong endowment but it cannot continue to rely solely on it for future growth. Expansion of services and increased visibility throughout the state requires an investment in additional staff and programs. We need to expand our base of support particularly in the National Capital Region, the Western Region and the Eastern Shore.
We need to fully employ the capabilities of our new Raisers Edge database to analyze demographics and donor profiles to make our efforts more strategic.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Work closely with the Executive Director and Board of Directors to raise financial resources needed to meet Preservation Maryland's annual budget and long-term fundraising goals. Develop an annual fundraising plan which specifically includes detailed projections on the funds that will be raised and the strategies to be employed with each component of the fundraising pool. Maintain a current calendar of planned campaigns and events. Schedule and staff approximately six development committee meetings annually and present detailed updates of the status of achieving fundraising goals.
Identify potential corporate and foundation supporters and write grant proposals. Coordinate membership, annual giving, and planned giving programs with support from the Administrative Assistant. Write membership letters, donor acknowledgements and other correspondence related to fundraising activities.
Solicit sponsorship for the Annual Meeting and working with the Education and Outreach Director for the Annual Conference and Endangered Maryland program as well.
Annual Meeting and Awards Program
Plan and raise funds for the Annual Meeting and Awards program. Publicize the event by mail and e-mail and prepare all follow-up correspondence. Secure the event location, select the menu and arrange for additional special needs of the meeting i.e. gifts, music, flowers, etc.
Assist the Nominating Committee in identifying and recruiting community leaders for the Board of Directors and coordinate the election of new board members and officers as part of the Annual Meeting. Prepare all fallow-up correspondence with the new board and returning board members.
Edit monthly e-newsletter The Phoenix and the Annual Report. Work with the graphic designer to produce invitations, and other promotional materials. Work with the Administrative Assistant to produce the newsletter and maintain the website. Employ e-marketing techniques to increase the channels of communication.
Recommend opportunities for positive exposure through all forms of media. Assist with press releases and occasional press events related to grant awards and advocacy initiatives.
Plan and raise funds to support two regional donor cultivation events each year. Work with supporters in the community to select a site, plan the program including catering, decorations, speaking, invitations and promotion.
Assist with planning and fundraising for other special projects and events as needed.
