POSITION: director of undergraduate program in Historic Preservation & Community

Planning/tenured faculty in Art History Department

The College of Charleston seeks a qualified person to direct the undergraduate program

in Historic Preservation and Community Planning, and to be a teaching faculty member

within the art history department (which houses the program). The program director will

oversee curriculum and course scheduling, administer the budget, liaise with the graduate

program in Historic Preservation (jointly administered by the College of Charleston and

Clemson University), and provide leadership and vision for one of the largest

undergraduate programs in historic preservation in the nation.

The candidate should qualify for appointment as a tenured associate professor or

professor. Expectations for teaching are a 2/2 load, and research and service

commensurate with a tenured member of the faculty of the College of Charleston, an

institution with a tradition of high-quality undergraduate liberal arts education. The

Director should have a terminal degree in historic preservation, planning, architectural

history, cultural resource management, or other relevant field. Ph.D. highly preferred,

and 5+ years of experience in preservation. Those candidates with previous

administrative experience, and strong connections to related organizations and

disciplinary groups (such as historic preservation agencies, foundations, and societies) are

preservation and cultivates a strong preservationist community. Numerous collaborative

opportunities are possible with the Historic Charleston Foundation, the Preservation

Society of Charleston, the National Park Service, the National Trust, the SC SHPO

office, US ICOMOS and the American College of the Building Arts.
