Job Description:

Responsible for overseeing Arts and Culture curatorial affairs and related content development for the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS).  Oversees the curatorial department to ensure that strategic planning, implementation, and evaluation are ongoing activities that reflect the institutional mission and move the ISMHS forward. Serves as an advisor, providing direction to exhibition development, interpretation of collections, and educational programs. Ensures that all industry standards are adhered to in regards to stewardship of the museum's artifact collections.  Incumbent will also serve as an expert in Indiana history and material culture, working with other cultural and social history curators to curate the relevant collections and directing their organization, development, maintenance, interpretation, and use. Responsible for taking a leading role in the development and implementation of temporary and permanent exhibitions related to cultural history.

Responsibilities:

Vision and Leadership:

  • Oversee the museums curatorial and collections plans related to arts and culture, working closely with the Senior Curator of Cultural History and the Chief Curator of Fine Arts, as well as the entire curatorial staff.
  •  Provide creative leadership in the stewardship of the cultural collections, including making the collections accessible through multiple avenues.
  • Ensure that arts and culture section activities are well-integrated with departments across ISMHS.
  • Support the overall exhibition program by developing exhibitions and supervising Arts and Culture curators' exhibition work.
  •  Play an active role in the redesign of the core cultural galleries.
  •  Direct curatorial involvement in the development and implementation of arts and culture related interpretive plans.
  •  Collaborate on grant writing and donor cultivation.
  •   Prepare and oversee budgets for collection and interpretation projects and ensure that available resources are allocated effectively.
  • Participate in strategic planning related to the museum's curatorial, collections, and interpretive directions.
  •  Direct and oversee the acquisition of artifacts and the development of exhibitions and programming related to specialist areas of Indiana history and material culture.
  •  Provide support for installations and programs at the State Historic Sites.
  •  Work with marketing and communications staff to ensure that information about the collections and related activities is broadly disseminated.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

 Community and Support Organizations:

  • Represent the museum in the broader community and collaborate with outside organizations that share aspects of the museums mission related to arts and culture.

Operations and Supervision:

  • Plan, coordinate and manage the Arts and Culture collections.
  •  Supervise the Arts and Culture section curators and volunteers, assigning duties, developing goals, refining collections and conservation strategies and directing daily operations.
  • Conduct interviews, hire, train and evaluate subordinate personnel.
  • Supervise the arts and culture curators' involvement in the museum and historic sites' interpretive program, including development of exhibitions and programming.
  • Direct and oversee the acquisition of arts and culture artifacts.
  • Serve on cross-disciplinary project teams.
  • Write for scholarly and popular publications. 
  • Lecture for specialized and general audiences.

Preferred Experience:

MA in history, American studies or other related field with a minimum of 10 years full-time, relevant curatorial, project management and/or collections management experience; PhD is a plus

  • This is a specialized professional position with substantial management responsibilities.
