Functional Job Title/Description:

National Register Historian

Class Summary:

The National Register Historian works under administrative direction and is responsible for researching data on historical properties and updating survey files. This position is governed by agency policy.

Example of Work:

















Researches historic properties to gather information on construction, building history, etc., both at constituent request and as part of agency initiatives.

Compiles and records gathered information into survey and computerized files, including map and location information, photographs taken during research, etc.

Researches and writes narrative histories for National Register of Historic Places nominations.

Provides information regarding historic properties and related activities to public and private groups as requested.

Performs duties related to ensuring timely distribution and completion of Determination and Eligibility sessions for potential National Register properties.

Reviews proposed building projects to assess their impact on historical sites and conformance with federal regulations.

Participates in training workshops for the public and/or researches and writes publications on historic preservation programs.

Performs related responsibilities as required or assigned.

Working Relationships:

The National Register Historian has regular contact with agency personnel, federal officials and the general public.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:

Knowledge of national, state, and local history and architecture.

Knowledge of historical research methods and techniques.

Ability to research, write and edit historical papers.

Ability to develop historical programs for the public.

Ability to photograph historic properties.

Minimum Qualifications:

The formal education equivalent of a bachelors degree in history or related field, plus two years of experience in historical research or related field.



Special Requirements:

In-state travel, sometimes overnight is required.  A pre-employment criminal background check is required.
