International Conservation Center - Citta di Roma and ICCROM

In 2005, The Israel Antiquities Authority, the Old Akko Development Company, and the Akko Municipality joined forces and founded the International Conservation Center – Città di Roma. The Center’s objective is function as a technical training institute for all preservation and conservation professions. Programs focus on both the theoretical and the practical aspects of conservation. The Center is situated in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old City of Acre, Israel. A site that provides intimate access to the veritable living laboratory of the historic living city for the study and application of practical heritage conservation. The Center serves as a place of study for researchers in the field, as well as for students, from Israel and abroad, providing them with hands-on conservation experience. Additional programs and activities reflect and feature Acre’s rich cultural heritage, and encourage economic development for the city’s residents. The continued development of the Center is due to fruitful cooperation between the Israel Antiquities Authority and the Cultural Ministry of the Italian Government. In 2009 the mayor of Rome Giovanni Alemano bestowed upon the Center, the prestigious “Dan David” award to commemorate the Italian activities in San Giovanni di Acre during the Middle Ages. This collaboration provides the Center access to unrivaled Italian conservation specialists. Acre is an historic port city on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, and is home to remains of world cultures including the Hellenistic, Roman, Mamluk, Crusaders, Ottoman Empire, and the British Mandate.
