Town of Swan's Island, Lighthouse Committee

Swan’s Island is a beautiful and remote Maine island, reachable by Maine State Ferry Service. It has a year round population of about 350 and an active lobster fishery. The population rises to about a thousand in the summer months. The Town of Swan’s Island owns the Burnt Coat Harbor Light Station, which was constructed in 1872 and remains an active aid to navigation. The Town has a historic restoration project at the Light Station, assisted financially by the Friends of the Swan’s Island Lighthouse (FOSIL). The buildings themselves tell the historic preservation story. The restored rooms on the ground floor of the Keeper’s House are also used in the summer for historic exhibits and displays by local artists. This will be the third summer that the Keeper’s House will be open to visitors. In summer 2013, there were about 2,500 visitors to the house during the 10 week summer season. Visitors also enjoy about 2 miles of trails that begin at the light station and wind around Hockamock Head, giving access to two beaches.
