The Challenge?
Providing exceptional support for engineering and construction services to government and military clients. The Architectural Historian career path provides daily support to Edwards AFBs cultural resources program through reviewing undertakings for potential impacts to historic properties, coordinating consultation with the State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO) and Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, evaluating sites for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places, preparing nomination packages, and maintaining a buildings database. This is your chance to be a member of our Cultural Resources Team. You will have access to a great deal of resources to complete your tasks and grow in skill. You should have a successful 1 to 5 year track as an Architectural Historian, and a desire to grow personally as well as professionally with each project. This position will be onsite at Edwards Air Force Base, California.

Our Architectural Historians :

  • Assist the Base Historic Preservation Officer (BHPO) to determine scope and goals of the Historic Buildings Program.
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert on federal and military regulations as they apply to historic buildings.
  • Evaluate buildings for National Register eligibility and prepare nomination packages for eligible buildings.
  • Maintain the historic buildings database and ensure concordance with the installation real property inventory.
  • Perform fundamental condition assessments of eligible buildings with the purpose of developing preservation strategies for those most threatened.
  • Review construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance projects for compliance with applicable federal, Department of Defense, and Air Force historic preservation regulations and guidance.
  • Provide analysis and cultural resources content for environmental assessments.
  • Support the BHPO during consultation and development of agreements with the SHPO, as required for mitigation of adverse effects to historic properties.
  • Present historic preservation concerns and awareness training to interdisciplinary groups that may include high-ranking officials.
  • Review and provide updated content for integrated cultural resources management plans, general installation plans, area development plans, and other documents as needed.
  • Position requires a current Secret Security Clearance (or ability to obtain). To obtain, must be a U.S. citizen.


  • Masters Degree in Architectural History, Historic Preservation, Architecture, or a related field.
  • One year of professional experience in historic preservation or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be in good health, able to lift and carry 30 lbs, able to climb ladders and stairs, able to work in extreme weather conditions, be comfortable maneuvering in narrow passages, and familiar with common PPE requirements for construction sites.
  • Must have experience using a digital single lens reflex camera.
  • Must be motivated, and can work safely with minimum supervision or leading a small team.
